Intersections: A math-science journal

Another teacher and I founded this entirely student-run math-science journal so that kids could show off their work inside and outside the classroom. Click the image to see the journal. How we created the journal is here.

I tend to write my own curricula for my courses. Above are some examples of the types of things I create. I have written entire curricula (throwing out the textbook and using my own work) for non-AP calculus, Advanced Precalculus, Algebra II, and Advanced Geometry.

ASSESSMENTS

I tend to focus on the conceptual underpinnings to things. Most assessments have a few concept-y and explain-this-in-detail questions.

project based learning (kinda)

I do a quarter long project with all my multivariable calculus students -- each individually picks a topic and goes for it. Below is a video of a machine one student built to create damped Lissajous curves. (Here are some posts about some other projects: 2011, 2014, 2015, 2016)
After creating a prospectus and timeline for their project, students then make their own grading rubric. The year culminates with 25 minute presentations given to fellow students, teachers, and parents.

quotations

… This year has truly changed my perspective on math as a whole. I have learned to appreciate it as a skill instead of look at it as a burden on my shoulders. Mr. Shah’s teaching style has made learning complicated subjects all too easy. His well organized and obviously rehearsed presentations which are used to teach each new unit make note taking efficient as well ...

Technically Beautiful

editor for mathematics teacher

Picture
Curated (with a museum educator and another math teacher) and created teaching materials for a math-art show in Packer's Shen gallery. Featuring five artists (The Oakes Twins, George Hart, Paul Salomon, Veronika Irvine, and Edmund Harriss), the show shared my fundamental viewpoint that math is inherently beautiful and creative.(Blogpost on the show, including a walkthrough video of the gallery; the website for the show.)

Since late 2014 (to late 2017), I have been one of two editors for the "Activities for Students" section of NCTM's Mathematics Teacher journal.
Picture
In this capacity, I have read and made recommendations on all submitted articles, and worked with authors of accepted manuscripts to strengthen their activities and improve the writing in their manuscripts.
